Welcome to Uganda.
A hidden gem of East Africa, often overlooked in favour of its coast lined neighbours Tanzania and Kenya, Uganda has so much to offer and was once described by Winston Churchill as "The Pearl of Africa" !
The beautiful natural environment of Uganda varies from dense tropical forests to deep river valleys, lakes and banana plantations.
The green lushness of the region, combined with red okra-thatched village huts and the bustling towns give an extraordinary uniqueness to this part of Africa which has always extended a particularly friendly welcome to Volunteers in Uganda.
Our projects and volunteering opportunities in Uganda take place in rural communities in Uganda.
Start and duration of the programs
The volunteer program begins on the first and third Monday of each month. Volunteers can choose to volunteer for periods ranging from 1 week to 24 weeks.
Volunteers must be 18 years or older on the volunteer program start date, have adequate volunteer travel insurance and provide a criminal background check to Butterfly staff on arrival in Uganda.
With how many other volunteers am I?
Between 10 and 30 volunteers start on our volunteer programs in Uganda each month.
What does this mean for you? More people to socialize with and travel with, more people to meet from different cultures, morepeople to volunteer with, more projects to work on, more staff support, better infrastructure for volunteers and lower fees!
Are you a qualified doctor, nurse or health professional? Do you want to share your knowledge and experience with severely deprived communities? We need volunteers to join our medical/health program in Uganda. Malaria, typhoid, pneumonia, and tetanus are treatable diseases, yet many still die in Uganda as a result of not receiving proper medical care. Government-run hospitals and medical clinics are ill-equipped to handle the volume of people in need of care. As a medically qualified volunteer you can help by sharing your medical skills and working alongside local staff to provide those in need with basic medical care. Volunteers have the opportunity to work in the areas of general medical practice, maternal health, minor surgery, and laboratory work. This role is suitable for self-directed, caring people who are medically qualified.
Further your medical experience by working alongside doctors and nurses in a Ugandan medical facility. Those with professionalmedical experience can get involved in a more hands-on capacity.
Are you a natural communicator? Are you kind, caring and organized? As a volunteer teacher you will help to empower girls and boys by giving them the skills they need to overcome poverty and to make their voice heard.
We have opportunities for volunteers to assist with teaching at primary and secondary levels, where volunteer teachers can teach core subjects, such as
English, mathematics, science, social sciences, and can initiate extra-curricular activities. This role is suitable for a caring, motivated, and self-directed person.
A teaching qualification is not required (except for some secondary teaching placements) but volunteers need to be confident in the above subjects and preferably have or be studying towards a university degree
Become a part of the community in this diverse, welcoming and friendly country. Teach at the local school, we have to offer and explore its overwhelming beauty with over 6 different teaching locations.
